English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspurs were recently in Perth as part of their pre-season warm up tour. Our TSH kids were there to listen to - and take on - their coaches.

Following the roaring success of last year’s training session with Aston Villa, Telethon Speech & Hearing (TSH) has again brought the deaf education sector together to provide a unique opportunity for children with hearing loss.

Partnering with Football Futures, TSH was able to coordinate a training session with some of the coaching staff from English Premier League soccer giants Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. This saw TSH primary school students join kids with hearing loss from other services throughout WA for a wonderful day of fun.

In what was an unforgettable day for players of all skills and abilities in Western Australia, participants, families, volunteers and supporting organisations gathered at Rosalie Park in Perth/Boorloo to learn and take part in a few of the coaching activities of the backroom team of the Premier League giants.

The day saw parents getting involved with their kids and culminated in an exciting 10-versus-4 game between the kids and the Spurs coaching staff – with the kids coming out on top.

“We know children with hearing loss can achieve anything they want to, we just need to provide them with the opportunities” said Mark Fitzpatrick, TSH CEO said. “This event is about kids having a unique experience, having fun, and enjoying the game. It is also about showing themselves that they can anything they want and their hearing loss will not be a barrier to them achieving their dreams”.

The event captured the true spirit of the beautiful game, showcasing the power of inclusion and the joy it brings to all participants.

"It is critical that any person, particularly children with special needs, get the opportunity to play the sport they love. Football Futures has a number of programs to help children from all backgrounds participate in this wonderful sport. For this event we are so lucky to work with Telethon Speech & Hearing and the deaf community to make this happen” said Brent Hedley, Executive Officer of Football Futures.

"We are fortunate to be able to work with Football Futures to deliver this event,” added Fitzpatrick. “They have been great to work with and we are also lucky to have the support of the Deafness Council, along with other service providers to make sure we can involve as many children as possible.”

And will it happen next year? Watch this space!
